This is already a great time, but there are a few small things that could make it even better.
The longer something has been in the works, the more it has to live up to, and Dwarf Fortress does just that. This huge virtual world, whose main goal is to build an underground dwarf society, seems almost too sophisticated and detailed. Still, players who take the time to learn how the game works will find themselves immersed in a digital world that comes to life because of what they do.
But the people who made the game have said that there is still a lot to work on, so there is still room for improvement. Just playing Dwarf Fortress makes you wonder if making some changes to a great thing would make it even better.
A Generating Compendium
When a fantasy realm is presented, it’s natural to want to know what kind of world it is and what’s in it. Dwarf Fortress has so many different beings, animals, materials, plants, and other things that it’s almost too much. Even though there are ways to keep track of them, it should be the subject of a huge UI book.
Imagine a big book inside the game that has detailed information about everything you find and every living thing you meet. You could look it up whenever you wanted. That would add to the idea of making this dream world and writing about it.
Further Animation
The more complicated and hard to understand a game’s mechanics are, the more it has to give up in other areas. Dwarf Fortress spent so much time making sure all the simulated parts worked well that for years they just used text-based images like Minesweeper.
After the game was released to the public, pictures were added that were somewhere between Super Hydlide and Vampire Survivors. There’s nothing wrong with that, but with so many creatures and events, it would be nice to see animations that show what’s going on in more depth.
An Official Manual
The more work people are willing to put in to learn a game, the better and more interesting it is. This group includes games like DayZ, Minecraft, and now Dwarf Fortress, which don’t have instructions. There will be some small guides, but given how complicated Dwarf Fortress is, no one would mind if the game manual was the size of War and Peace.
The game’s creators have been adding lessons and even links to video guides, which is good, but it’s still not enough. As long as there isn’t an official guidebook to read, many players still play by trial and error.
An Official Modding Tool
Some game companies don’t like it when fans change their games, but others rely on community-made content to grow their player base and games. The Sims 4 is a good example, and it’s possible that Dwarf Fortress will be the same. Since it is such a detailed game, each person’s world can go in an infinite number of different ways.
But since there is so much material to work with in space, it could be the perfect place for both experienced and new modders to show what they can do. Whether this means adding more mechanics or making a certain part of the game totally different, modders would appreciate an official way to test out their ideas on top of what Steam Workshop already offers.
Customization Options
In sim games, it’s fun to be able to keep an eye on people or a whole community, and it’s also fun to be able to put parts of real life on them. Dwarf Fortress can make a lot of different characters and animals, and each one has its own personality. This is one of the more personal parts of the game, and it adds another challenge to the way the game is run.
Still, it would be nice if the game let you change your dwarves and castle in a way that makes sense to you. This would make the game more fun, whether it means giving your dwarves a unique look or bringing something from your real life into the game.
In-Game Quests
Even though Dwarf Fortress is a very detailed game, your goal is to “build and thrive for as long as you can.” When you start the game, you are given an open area and a few dwarves to start building your underground society. You want to make it as big and impressive as possible while keeping everyone safe and happy.
With this idea, it’s up to you to make your own goal and way to play the game, just like in the original Minecraft. Still, some players like when Drive Mad game gives them quests, jobs to do, or achievements to earn. Even though the last one isn’t part of the game, adding the first two would make it more official and add more tasks.
Online Play
Sim games are fun because you can play them by yourself, kind of like a digital side project. But one of the best things about the internet is that it lets players tell the whole world about their in-game achievements or strange events. It’s even more fun when people can play a simulation game together to reach higher levels.
Dwarf Fortress is so big that it would be perfect for a group of people to play together online. In the virtual world, they could talk to each other, work together, or even fight for power. This would be very hard to do, but it would be well worth it.
