Introduction
Summit League is another NCAA Division I with its most members from Midwestern United States. Some States such as Nebraska to Missouri, Dakotas. It was founded in 1982 on 18 June. It contains total 19 Sports Fields.
It has their headquarters in south Dakota and Sioux Falls. Today there are total 9 full members in addition seven association members. In 2021, there was change in the core conference memberships. A year before it, Kansas City returned as a full member after years of absence.
There are now 32 complete members in the league; Western Illinois University, the final original member, joined the Ohio Valley Conference on July 1, 2023, but it will continue to play in the Summit men’s soccer league until the autumn of the same year.
Foundation
On 18 June 1982, they had new association and being in official NCAA. It happened in the Illinois city of Chicago at the O’Hare Hilton Hotel in Chicago. The newly created talk included non-football sponsors the city of Cleveland State University, College of Wisconsin-Green the bay, and others. This was in addition to up-to-date MCAA members the northern region. Iowa, Eastern Illinois, as well as the Southwest Kansas States.
Today there are total current members are North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, and St. Thomas have FCS football programs.
History
This can be root back to late 1970s. At that time, it was the only team in the division II which is when it was founded. There were many who showed interest in this; however, they did not join it teams such as University of Akron, Eastern Illinois University, University of Northern Iowa, Northern Michigan University, Western Illinois University, and Youngstown State University these were the teams. They also had a conference in 1981 season and saw whole move form Division II to AA as the final season under name of Mid-Continent Association.
Changes in women Sports
The early 1990s saw the conference undergo its first modifications. In 1990, Northern Illinois University and the University of Akron joined the Missouri Valley Conference, forcing Southwest Missouri State to leave. In 1991, Wright State University also joined the MVC, after Southwest Missouri State and Northern Iowa. The conference saw significant modifications in 1992. Akron first transferred to the Mid-American Conference (MAC), leaving Youngstown State University of Ohio as its successor. More importantly, by incorporating the North Star Conference, the Mid-Continent gained access to women’s sports.
Simultaneously, with the Gateway Association’s merger into the Missouri Valley the conference is Eastern Illinois or Western Illinois switched their female athletic programs to the Mid-Continent. A year later, the college of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee became an association of the Mid-Continent.
In conclusion, NCAA this league contains higher number of members and several basketball picks had been stated to pick from the college basketball. There were number of changes occurred over the time period of its lifetime till today and still people are loving it.
