Raja Ravi Verma – Shakuntala
Shakuntala, a well-known painting by famous Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma, depicts a critical scene from the epic Mahabharata. Ravi Varma depicts Shakuntala, a major figure, pretending to remove a thorn from her foot while her genuine aim is to find her husband/lover, Dushyanta. Meanwhile, her friends see right through her deception. Tapati Guha Thakurta, an art historian, commented on this painting, saying:
“The twist and turn of the head and body draw the viewer into the narrative, inviting one to place this scene within an imagined sequence of images and events.” On its own, the painting appears to be a frozen tableau (like a still from a moving film), snatched from an ongoing narrative.

Bharat Mata – Abanindranath Tagore
Bharat Mata, a masterwork from the Bengal School of Art and one of Abanindranath Tagore’s most recognisable paintings, depicts a saffron-clad woman suggestive of a sadhvi. She is seen clutching several symbolic things in each of her four hands, including a book, sheaves of rice, a piece of white fabric, and a garland.
This artwork has enormous emotional and historical value, and it was extremely popular with nationalists of the time, notably during the period when Lord Curzon advocated dividing Bengal.
Sister Nivedita, a fan of the artwork, declared her intention to travel across India, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, in order to inspire nationalist spirit among the people of the country.

Bapuji – Nandlal Bose
Mahatma Gandhi is largely regarded as one of the world’s most extraordinary liberation fighters. However, few of us are aware that Bapu acted as a muse to a number of modern artists in India and throughout the world. During Gandhi’s lifetime, the renowned artist and Shantiniketan resident Nandalal Bose claimed that Bapu was an inspiration to all artists.
A linocut picture titled ‘Dandi March,’ created in 1930, contains the caption “Bapuji” and demonstrates Bose’s strong admiration for Gandhi. This landmark piece is permanently displayed in Delhi’s National Gallery of Modern Art.

Self-Portrait – Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel laureate, began his career as a painter in 1924, at the age of 63. Long before this, though, indications of his creative endeavors could be seen in the countless changes and drawings discovered in his writings.
As Tagore reached the conclusion of his long career, his desire to create work that might be enjoyed by everybody compelled him to paint more frequently. He created a plethora of sketches and drawings using brushes, pencils, and pens, with his self-portrait being one of the most well-known.
This piece depicts the artist’s full-face, bearded countenance, which is enhanced by the absence of color, bare backdrop, and use of crude pencil lines, giving it a primal appearance.
Mahishasura – Tyeb Mehta
Tyeb Mehta, India’s most notable modern artist, is well known for his retelling of the eponymous demon’s story, Mahishasura. This ground-breaking piece bears the distinction of being the first Indian painting to sell for more than a million dollars, fetching $1.584 million at Christie’s in 2005.
Mehta was inspired to create this masterpiece after visiting Shantiniketan, where the mythology of Mahishasura made a great impression on him. Mehta expertly combines old images with a minimalist approach to form, color, and line, yielding a strikingly contemporary composition filled with brilliant energy and vigor.
