The cricketing giants of Asia will soon fight it out in the highly-anticipated Asia Cup 2023 for the continental supremacy. One of the biggest limited-overs tournament in the game the Asia Cup is the only continental competition in the game and was started way back in 1984.
The inaugural edition of the tournament was held in the UAE with three participants – India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India were the inaugural winners of the tournament after beating both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. While the tournament started as an ODI event, it is now played in both the limited-overs format. The format of the tournament depends on the upcoming ICC event.
India are the most successful side in the history of the competition, followed by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. While India have won the Asia Cup seven times (6 ODIs, 1 T20I), Sri Lanka and Pakistan have won it six (5 ODIs, 1 T20I) and two times (2 ODI) respectively. Apart from these three, no other team has managed to win the Asia Cup so far.
Asia Cup 2023 Schedule:
The sixteenth edition of the Asia Cup is just about to start. The continental championship will get underway on August 30 in Multan. The tournament will be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Pakistan will host four games while Sri Lanka will host the other nine games including all of India’s games as well as the final. India have refused to travel to Pakistan due to the poor bilateral relations between the two countries.
A total of six teams will participate in Asia Cup 2023. The five Test playing nations of the continent – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be joined by Nepal who will be playing in the Asia Cup for the first time in their history.
The six teams have been divided into two groups – Group A and Group B. While India, Pakistan and Nepal are in Group A, defending champions Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are in Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 4. The top two teams from the Super 4 will then qualify for the final. The final is scheduled to be held in Colombo on September 17.
